Common Sources of PBDE Exposure

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are chemicals used as flame retardants. (For a one-page description of PDBEs and related issues, read the PBDE BCERF Brief as a web page or in pdf format.) Some PBDEs have been identified as endocrine disruptors. They have been widely detected in people, wildlife, and the environment.

PBDEs are named for their chemical structure. Three types of PBDEs are used commercially.

PBDEs are regulated differently according to the mixture (number of bromines). Deca PBDE is the least regulated mixture.
