Carol Devine, Ph.D., R.D.
Dr. Carol Devine is Associate Professor in the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University. She earned her doctorate in nutrition from Cornell, her master's degree from Tufts University, and her bachelor's degree from the University of New Hampshire. A registered dietitian, she completed the dietetic internship at the Frances Stern Nutrition Center, Tufts New England Medical Center. She did post-doctoral research at the Research Department of Human Nutrition, Royal Agricultural and Veterinary University, Frederiksberg, Denmark; and at the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University. She has served as Visiting Professor at the Center for Community Based Research, Dana Farber Cancer Institute; Extension Nutrition Specialist at the University of New Hampshire; Nutrition Coordinator in the Bureau of Maternal and Child Health, New Hampshire Division of Public Health Services; and Instructor in Nutrition at the University of New Hampshire.
Dr. Devine's research is in the area of women's health and nutrition. She studies continuity and change in women's health and nutrition choices over the life course and how these choices are affected by life transitions and social roles such as work and family. She is principle investigator on an NIH grant to study the effect of work and family spillover on the food choices of low-wage workers, and she is co-investigator on an NIH grant to conduct a worksite obesity prevention intervention trial, along with colleagues at the University of Rochester.
As a research collaborator with BCERF, Dr. Devine is co-principle investigator on a USDA-CSREES-funded project to conduct and evaluate an environmental intervention to prevent obesity and thus reduce breast cancer risk in a rural community in New York State. With other BCERF staff she critically evaluates the research on breast cancer and diet and lifestyle risk factors. She is also an investigator on a project to investigate the attitudes and perceptions of teachers and other school personnel about breast cancer risk.
In addition to her work with BCERF, Dr. Devine is Extension Leader for the Division of Nutritional Sciences She is also a member of the Cornell NutritionWorks team, a web-based professional development service for nutrition professionals and is collaborating on a Cornell NutritionWorks project to build the capacity of nutrition and health professionals to address childhood obesity in their communities.
